I've never thought about the benefits of using a Monocular until I started digiscoping. Carrying all your digiscoping equipment around can be hard work, especially if your using a heavy weight tripod.

Having some form of optical equipment with you for spotting possible subject to digiscope, in my opinion is a must. Binoculars can be bulky and add further weight to your all ready heavy kit.

Using a monocular, gives you decent magnification, but without the bulk. I simply slipped it in to my jacket pocket, and used it to help locate my subject matter.
